What to take to a Surf Camp in Costa Rica

A lot of people may not realize this but the things you take with you for a surf camp can have a major say in the success of your trip. For example, if you take the wrong type of sunscreen you will find yourself red as a lobster in no time and your holiday will be cut short even before it started, maybe you didn't get multiple bathing suits which means you will have to wait while your only bathing suit is getting cleaned. What a delightful way to spend a holiday.

In order to avoid such disasters on your surf camp in Costa Rica, I have put together this list of a few of the basic things which you absolutely must take with yourself:-

1. You will need to carry cash or at least find out about your cash withdrawal options in Costa Rica before getting there. You can't find too many ATM's in the country and finding someone who accepts traveler's checks or credit cards is even more difficult.

2. Ensure you carry your passport with you and that you have more than enough time left before it expires. Also, don't forget to book your air tickets and keep them in a safe place.

3. Get yourself at least one pair of water shoes like Tevas, reef walkers, gators or crocks. You may find yourself tromping through rivers every now and then and you wouldn't want to wear your fancy leather shoes while doing so.

4. It is also advisable that you take a pair of hiking boots along with you just in case. Rubber boots will work fine as well.

5. A small flashlight and an umbrella are another couple of essential items to put in your suitcase.

6. As mentioned above, take at least 2 bathing suits with you. If possible take 3. This will ensure you always have one to wear. A lot of people in Costa Rica live in their bathing suits. You wouldn't want to look out of place would you?

7. Sunscreen is very important as well for anyone going surfing in CR. The brand choice is pretty much up to you but ensure that the sunscreen you choose is waterproof and has a SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30. You should also take a can of insect repellent just to be safe.

8. A hat and sunglasses are recommended as well.

9. As far as clothing is concerned, you will need to take a lot of summer/beach clothes to ensure you have enough to wear. Yoga clothes are a good choice. Or maybe you prefer tank tops and shorts?

10. Don't forget to carry a camera with you or you may not have any way of capturing all the sights and sounds of the country to show your family and friends when you get back home. Remember to carry enough batteries as well since a camera without a battery is just as useful as a rock.

11. Lastly, if you are on any medication, take enough of it for your surf camp trip and take some for a few extra days just in case as well. If everything goes fine, no problem. But if your flight is delayed for a few days, you wouldn't want to be without your medication would you?
